Reading Notes: Extra Credit MS/Lakes Creation

Bibliography: MS/Lakes Creation

There was a creator that had no eyes and ears, but it could see and hear. Originally, earth was under water, so fish were first created. Crawfish brought up land so that men could be made. The laws were not followed, and tobacco allowed men to rest. Women were made and taught how to cook and sew skins. The creator gave them bows and arrows, which punished the animals. He taught them fire for cooking and to honor their food sources. There is respect for the animals that gave good advice. The moon and stars were made to give life and light. The mounds are the camping places of the spirits sent to teach men. If I were to write a story, I would focus on the spirits coming down to teach the men for the creator. I think this would provide a great opportunity for creativity.

  1. I am so glad you read one of these animal-brings-up-land creation stories; you will find this type of story again and again in different tribal traditions, which suggests that it is an old story. A VERY old story. Different animals play the role of earth-bringer, but it's the same basic plot each time. Check out this
Lakota creation story...! Maybe that is a sign that you really need to do a Lakota project. :-)
