Reading Notes: Odyssey Land of Cyclops, Part A

Bibliography: Homer's Land of Cyclops

In this story, Odysseus reaches the land of the ruthless Cyclops. They live in caves and have no laws amongst each other. There is a fertile area nearby that homes many goats. The Cyclops have no boats or craftsmen that would build boats to allow them to travel to other lands. The land they inhabit is very fertile and would support a ton of crops if needed. Odysseus and his men entered the land via their boats. They could not see anything in the dark until they ran ashore. They then stopped to sleep for the night. At day break, they began to explore the island. The nymphs drove the goats toward his men and they hunted them until they had their fill. They feasted on the goat and enjoyed the wine that they had taken previously. They could hear the cyclops and see their smoke from the distance. Odysseus gathered his men the next day to go learn about the Cyclops and their way of life. They arrived and saw a giant with his herd of sheep. They identified him as a lawless monster that was not human. I think this excerpt would provide a great story opportunity. Because I identified pirates as one of the themes for a possible project, I could craft a bit of a pirate story loosely based on this plot. The pirates could be traveling and stopping to rest on a beach after looting some rum from a nearby place. The pirates could see some smoke from a nearby island and go to investigate. When they get to the island, they could see a huge monster, the likes of which they have never seen before.
