Reading Notes: Cherokee Part A The Rabbit Goes Duck Hunting

Bibliography: The Rabbit Goes Duck Hunting by James Mooney

For the Cherokee unit, the story for part A that stuck out to me the most was the tale of the rabbit going duck hunting. In this tale, the rabbit made great claims and was able to trick others to believe it. He said that he could swim in water and eat fish just like the otter. He even came up with a plan that deceived the otter himself. Later, the otter said that he sometimes eats ducks. The rabbit then claimed that he could too. They went out and the otter pulled a duck under without the others noticing. While this was happening, the rabbit made a noose. He tried to wrap it around a duck. The duck flew away with the rabbit hanging from the noose. It kept flying until the rabbit had to drop from the noose and fell into a tree stump. He stayed there where he was starving. One day, he heard children playing outside. He convinced them to get their father and cut a hole in the tree. The rabbit then jumped out and got away. This would be the fun opportunity to tell the story of someone who is always boastful and deceptive.
