Reading Notes: The Monkey and the Turtle, Extra Credit

Bibliography: The Monkey and the Turtle

There were once two friends, a monkey and a turtle. They saw a banana plant floating, so the turtle swam out to get it. They cut it in half to make it fair. The monkey chose the leaves and the turtle took the roots. They both planted their share, but only the turtle's grew. One day, the monkey offered to climb the tree and get bananas in return for half of them. Instead, the monkey ate them all. The turtle shoved sharp things in the trunk and this injured the monkey when he eventually slid down. The monkey later found the turtle under a pepper plant. The turtle said she was guarding the king's fruit and offered the monkey some. The monkey could not eat them until the turtle was gone. When gone, the monkey ate the peppers and burned its mouth. The monkey searched for the turtle again and found it near a snake hole. The turtle asked if the monkey wanted to wear the king's belt. When the snake came out, the monkey grabbed it thinking it was a belt and nearly died at the hands of the snake. The monkey went to look for the turtle, who was hiding in a coconut shell. When tired, the monkey laid down against the shell and called out for the turtle. The turtle replied. Thinking the turtle was in his abdomen, he started hitting his belly with a stone and died. I could use this tale to write a story in which one friend keeps getting tricked by another friend on OU campus.
