Reading Notes: The White Man and Snake Extra Credit
Bibliography: The White Man and Snake, South African
In this story, a white man stumbles across a snake that was trapped by a stone. The man lifts the stone so that the snake can be free. The snake then wants to bite the man, but the man objects and seeks wiser counsel. They go to a hyena. The hyena wanted a piece of the man, so it insisted that the snake bite him. The man decided to seek other counsel. They went to the jackal and told their story. The jackal said it did not believe the snake was trapped. They took the jackal and placed the stone on the snake to show the jackal. The jackal then said to leave the snake and let it fend for itself since it wanted to bite the man who helped it. This offers up a moral that could be transferred to countless storytelling plots and situations. I could even find a way to use an OU plot to fit this type of narrative. Someone gets help and then treats the person who helped them poorly.
