Reading Notes: Cherokee Part B The Owl Gets Married

Bibliography: The Owl Gets Married by James Mooney

A widow with a daughter was telling the daughter to get and marry a good hunter man. A suitor came and said he was a good hunter, so the mother advised her to take him. The matter was arranged and the two went to live together. The man went out fishing all day but had no luck. He then went hunting but returned with only a few scraps. The old woman became suspicious. The girl followed her husband and saw that he changed into a hooting owl. She was surprised and angry with herself. Later, she confronted him and said she knew.

This would be a great storytelling opportunity that I could fit into my OU theme. I could write of a girl who goes off to college and her mother advises her to find and marry a good man with a great job. She thinks she finds one, but the man is not who he says he is. It might not be as extreme as turning into an owl, but there could definitely be a double life involved in this tale.
