Reading Notes: Eskimo Tales- The Giant Dog Extra Credit
Bibliography: The Giant Dog by Knud Rasmussen
There was a giant dog who could swim in the sea and carry whales and narwhal. The man who owned it cut holes in its jaws so that he could turn its head to either side. The man and his wife rode on his back to go places. The man wanted a son but did not have one. He gave his dog the amulet that would normally go to his son. One time, the dog ate a man and the owner had to go live somewhere else. One day, a kayak came and the owner took his dog up into the hills so he would not eat the man. One day, the dog smelled the stranger and the owner had to hide the stranger. One time, a man brought three big dogs to kill the dog. However, the dog crushed all three dogs. Soon, the dog made it a custom to go inland and kill the dwellers there. This scared the inland dwellers and kept them from carrying off women.
