Bibliography: Why Hummingbirds Drink Only Dew by Florence Stratton
Hummingbirds build their nests near water but do not drink from the water in which they bathe. Once, a hummingbird owned a lake with a blue heron. The hummingbird liked to hover in the shade and drink the water from the lake. The hummingbird and heron like to gamble. The hummingbird and heron bet that they could fly from one end of the lake to the other the fastest. The loser had to give up drinking water from the lake. The hummingbird could not fly at night so it stopped to sleep. The heron kept on flying. When the hummingbird reached the end the next day, he found the heron laughing at him. The hummingbird never drank from the lake again and that is why hummingbirds sip dew instead. This would be a fun story to retell of two friends who like to gamble. It would be tougher to fit with my OU theme that I have been sticking with, but it would still be a very good storytelling opportunity.
